THE CLIMATIC CURTAIN IS ONE OF THE MAJOR FEATURES OF A WELL-MADE PLAY. IT IS WHEN THE END OF AN ACT (OR SCENE) ENDS ON A TENSE AND HIGHLY DRAMATIC MOMENT.

ARE THERE ANY CLIMATIC CURTAINS IN AN INSPECTOR CALLS? EXPLAIN EACH OF THEM.
Stage Directions as we know are an essential thing in a well made play. In this play a very important climactic curtain is given to create tension in the audience. At the end of act one after Sheila has explained to Gerald that the Inspector probably knows more than he gives on and the Inspector is waiting for an explanation from Gerlad he uses a short sentence saying ‘’Well?’’ to create tension. After that short sentence the curtain immediately falls. As the audience wait for the curtain to rise they are eager to find out what Gerlad has to say. This keeps the audience interested and wanting to watch more.

THE EXPOSITION (THE OPENING) OF A WELL-MADE PLAY IS MEANT TO SERVE AS A GENTLE INTRODUCTION, PROVIDING BASIC INFORMATION ON:
* THE MAIN CHARACTERS
* THE BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
* THE THEMES AND IDEAS OF THE PLAY

TO WHAT EXTENT DOES AN INSPECTOR CALLS MEET THESE CRITERIA? FIND EXAMPLES TO SUPPORT YOUR IDEAS.

In ‘An Inspector Calls’ the opening act is very smooth and easy to understand.  It starts off with the main character in the same setting. When the Inspector walks in that is when the conflict begins to star. He says very clearly what has happened to Eva Smith and what his objective is for the night. Priestly also explains how all the characters are related and hoe the Inspector thinks they are connected to Eva Smith.

THIS IS WHEN A SECRET IS REVEALED, AGAIN, THIS SERVES TO ADD TO THE DRAMA AND TENSION.
ARE THE THERE ANY `OBLIGATORY SCENES`IN AN INSPECTOR CALLS? GIVE EXAMPLES AND EXPLANATIONS.
“Two hours ago a young woman died on the infirmary. She’d be taken there this afternoon because she’d swallowed a lot of strong disinfectant. Burnt her inside out, of course.”

In my opinion, this is one of the most obligatory scenes in the play. It creates tension right from the start and it automatically changes everything. Without this scene, there would not be such an impact throughout the play. It also creates the suspension needed to boost the rest of the play, which makes this scene crucial within the play ‘An Inspector Calls’.

IN ORDER TO HEIGHTEN THE SUSPENSE AND TENSION, ENTRANCES AND EXITS ARE PERFECTLY TIMED WITHIN A WELL-MADE PLAY. (SEE SEPARATE RESOURCE SHEET ON ENTRANCES AND EXITS.)
TO WHAT EXTENT IS THIS TRUE OF AN INSPECTOR CALLS? FIND AT LEAST THREE EXAMPLES OF THIS WITHIN THE PLAY AND EXPLAIN HOW THEY ADD TO THE SUSPENSE.
1. " The Inspector enters, and Edna goes, closing door after her. The Inspector need not be a big man but he creates at once an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness. He is a man in his fifties, dressed in a plain darkish suit of the period. He speaks carefully, weightily, and has a disconcerting habit of looking hard at the person he addresses before actually speaking."

 -Pg 11 ACT ONE

2. " At rise,  scene and situation are exactly as they were at the end of Act One. The Inspector remains at the door for a few moments looking at Sheila and Gerald. Then he comes forward, leaving door open behind him."

-Pg 27 ACT TWO

3. "He moves nearer a light – perhaps standard lamp – and she crosses to him. He produces the photograph. She looks at it closely, recognizes it with a little cry, gives a half-stifled sob, and then runs out. The inspector puts the photograph back in his pocket and stares speculatively after her. The other three stare in amazement for a moment."

-Pg 18 ACT ONE

As shown in these examples, entrances and exits are fundamental when it comes to creating suspense. For this to happen, they have to happen at the right moment and at the right time for them to create tension as well as suspense.

WHO, WITHIN THE PLAY ITSELF, CONTROLS WHO ENTERS AND LEAVES THE DINING ROOM?

The inspector is who controls who enters and leaves the dining room. He has everything planned in the play “An Inspector Calls”, therefore he controls most of it.

THE PLOT OF A WELL-MADE PLAY FOCUSES AROUND ONE MAJOR STORYLINE. THERE IS NO SUB-PLOT. HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE A SMATTERING OF COMPLICATIONS AND CRISIS WITHIN THE PLOT OF A WELL-MADE PLAY, ALL STRATEGICALLY PLACED FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT.

¨An Inspector Calls¨is a play that has been really well-thinked before and so that requires some type of planning, it needs to be really structured to have sense. Moments and actions all have a moral that needs to be understood so at the end you can be able to link one event to another for what you know and have read throughout the play, it is all about linking acts, in fact, everything counts, to get to the answer. It is true that you cannot dismiss anything, even the smallest detail counts. No situation is neither irrelevant nor insignificant and issues and clashes between them help to add the play some tension. Those clashes are always for the same reasons: different classes, which generation deals better with the blame and the most important, who can take responsability. Bear in mind that everything is around Eva´s suicide. Also those complications and crisis are there to see how the characters react to it which helps us to have a broader description of the characters. The characters find out that their pasts are all linked with her death. As I have said before, at the end everything fits together.
